Lesson - Backyard Bugs and an Insect Craft

Backyard Bugs

It’s Spring!  What a great time to get outside and check out some backyard bugs.  Have you ever wondered what makes an insect, an insect?  What kinds of bugs can you find in your own backyard?

  1. Join Mrs. Chinn on another Backyard Adventure by watching this video: .                   Create a sense of wonder with your child and pause the video at different points so that you can have a conversation about what they see.
  2. After watching the video discuss what the characteristics of an insect are. Refer to the anchor chart illustration of an ant that is in the video.  Using a piece of paper or a drawing journal, have your child draw an insect while adding the labels (head, thorax, abdomen, 6 legs, antennae, eyes, wings etc).
  3. Once the drawing is completed, have your child point to the different parts of their drawing while naming them.
  4. Now that your child’s drawing is complete, it is time to create an insect craft! Help your child think of an insect that they would like to make. Perhaps it’s something from the video, or one that they think is super interesting.   Try to search for a picture as a reference to help your child draw and build it.  Please know that all materials are suggestions.  You are welcome to substitute any of them based on the resources you have in your home.

    You will need:

    • Coloured paper
    • Glue
    • Scissors
    • Markers
    • Pencil
    • Anything else you’d like to use to decorate your insect

Once you have your supplies, watch this video together to learn how to create your insect!

We are excited to see what your child makes! Have fun!
